The Story Behind Our Name
Our business honours the tenacity, creativity, curiosity, diplomacy, fearlessness, compassion, and entrepreneurial spirit of Anthony Meuza van Diemen, who started his own business as a young man, and, after some challenges, persevered to rise through the ranks of the Dutch East India Company to become the Governor-General from 1636 to 1645.
It is important to call out that his first foray into business caused him to go bankrupt due to some bad advice, which reminds us of the importance of frank and fearless support. We are also inspired by van Diemen’s drive and determination to reclaim his legacy, through joining the Dutch East India Company in 1618. From the moment he landed at Batavia (modern day Jakarta), he was renowned for his attention to detail and proficiency in a range of business skills, quickly rising through the ranks of the company – and he used these new roles to help others around him. Through a respect and genuine interest in the local cultures, van Diemen sustained commercial relationships with Vietnam and Japan amongst other ports, as well as funding voyages of discovery, including Abel Tasman sailing and spotting the West Coast of Tasmania in 1642.
Not only is van Diemen’s legacy felt across the region, but he also left his mark in Batavia too. In his time as Governor-General, he helped to strengthen the commercial power of the city, created clarity in the legal code through the Batavian Statutes building churches, an orphanage and a hospital, and is noted for the occasions where he stood against injustice many times over.
And with Anthony van Diemen’s character a key inspiration of everything we do, it is these qualities that drive us forward to explore new opportunities, to seek more knowledge, embrace complexity and to ultimately achieve great things.
