At The van Diemen Project, Business is More Than Business – It’s About People, Place, and Purpose

At The van Diemen Project, we believe business is about more than profit and strategy. It’s about looking after yourself, supporting those around you, and caring for the place we all call home. Real impact happens when people, purpose and place are connected – and when enterprises of all kinds contribute to stronger, healthier communities.

As a Tasmanian business advisory and impact advisory organisation, our aim is to empower businesses, social enterprises, community groups, and leaders who are committed to creating positive social, environmental and economic outcomes.

We’re not just business advisors. Our approach is personal, practical and purpose-led. We help people and organisations to start, grow and sustain meaningful enterprises through training, events, education and hands-on mentoring. Whether you’re an entrepreneur with a fresh idea, a leader driving change, or a business seeking to diversify and grow, we walk beside you. Our multi-disciplinary team brings expertise in marketing, finance, technology, operations and people leadership, ensuring every part of your organisation works together for lasting change.

Let’s Talk More…

Every individual, business and organisation is unique — and we love coming alongside with advice, knowledge, skills and experience to help you make your opportunity matter.

Sometimes it’s easiest to start with a conversation. Tell us where you’re at, and we’ll talk through practical next steps and how we can help.

How we are different

We don’t just provide business advice — we offer a unique combination of impact and business advisory that drives results for individuals, organisations and communities across Tasmania.

Our values set us apart, and we’re committed to working with you to create meaningful change.

Inquisitive Minds

We are always curious and seeking more knowledge and opportunity. Our impact advisory and business advice is fuelled by asking the right questions, exploring what’s possible and finding practical solutions that help organisations overcome challenges.

Build as a Village

We believe we do better work when we seek the ideas, opinions and support of others. Our network of subject matter experts and mentors strengthens outcomes for small businesses, social enterprises and community organisations across Tasmania. We create safe space for open dialogue and co-design, celebrating different skills and perspectives to foster innovation and growth.

The Heart of a Person

We put people first. At the centre of every idea, enterprise and strategy is a person. We focus on helping leaders and owners thrive in life – not just in business – building genuine connection and supporting the organisation and the individual together.

Teach People to Fish

We build the foundations for ongoing momentum. Our training, mentoring and workshops are designed to empower organisations with knowledge and confidence – not create dependency – so progress continues well beyond the immediate challenge.

Uncompromised

We are independent and objective. We pride ourselves on providing honest, realistic and actionable advice that supports small businesses, community organisations and social enterprises across Tasmania and regional Australia.

Where Our Name Comes From?

While we are proudly Tasmanian, our name honours the tenacity, creativity, curiosity, diplomacy, fearlessness, compassion and entrepreneurial spirit of Anthony van Diemen.

As a young man, he started his own business and, after challenges, persevered to rise through the ranks to become the Governor-General of Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) from 1636 to 1645 – showing character and courage we still seek to embody today.

Our Impact

The van Diemen Project is proudly Tasmanian in the way that we work, the support that we offer and the place that we call home. That is why we’re proud to display the Tasmanian mark on our materials for workshops and training, as well as here on our website. And you will often see us at Brand Tasmania events too, as we’re passionate about helping more people, organisations and businesses quietly pursue the extraordinary.

The van Diemen Project supports the Sustainable Development Goals, both through the work that we do but also as an advocate of these goals across the community as a global framework for people, planet, peace and prosperity. Our impact and business advisory work intersects with the goals;

  • SDG 8, to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
  • SDG 9, to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
  • SDG 11, to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

while much of the impact and business advisory work elevating the other goals.
